Steve Wise the human being is very concerned about moral consideration. Steve Wise the animal rights lawyer is determined to require humans to respect the fundamental rights of nonhuman animals whether they want to or not. ~ Professor Steven Wise
Unless someone is prepared to deny rights for humans (including themself), it is unjust to deny them to other animals. And by rights, I don't just mean moral rights, I also mean legal rights. Unless you are an anarchist (to which you would reject the state itself and accompanying legal rights for anyone), it's unjust to deny legal rights to nonhuman animals.
