For the last sentence of my brief bio for the Class Intro booklet when I entered the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell, I wrote: "I cannot fathom those who do not understand that we, as the 'highest' species on the planet, are here to preserve and protect those who cannot do it for themselves."
There are few actions anyone can initiate that don't create at least some risk of harm to another, so I guess, on that account, the world is very violent place indeed.
